Battery Energy Storage System

A Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) is  technology that allows the storage of electrical energy for later use.

It consists of battery packs (often lithium-ion, but can be other types), power electronics, control systems, and sometimes transformers. These components work together to store energy when electricity is abundant or cheap, for use when demand is high or supply is low.

It’s anticipated that the BESS will occupy a footprint of 5-10 hectares within the site and will likely be located near the point of connection to the transmission network.

The BESS will almost certainly be of Lithium-Ion type, with exact make and model yet to be determined. It will be sourced from Tier-One suppliers proven in Australian energy storage applications.

The role of the BESS will be multi-faceted. It will:

  • tick icon

Manage intermittency of solar PV generation due to weather events

  • tick icon

Allow electricity produced by the Solar Farm during daylight hours to be used later in the day at periods of peak demand when customers need it most

  • tick icon

Provide services to help stablise the electricity grid

BESS are an integral part of the future smart grid systems and are crucial for the effective integration of renewable energy sources, like solar and wind, which are intermittent by nature.
